Disk space:

Disk space is the amount of space that you will be allowed for your account, and is measured in MB (megabytes) or GB (gigabytes)
Note: On virtual (shared hosting) servers this space amount includes your website AND your email storage space for all of your users.

POP3 e-mail accounts:

"POP3 e-mail accounts" refers to how many e-mails accounts you would be allowed to set up for your site. For example if you had a Bronze account that offers 10 POP3 accounts, that means you could then setup 10 different e-mail accounts for your site.

Transfer/month:

This refers to the total amount of data transferred to and from your site each month, including web, FTP, email, and all other traffic. We measure the traffic directly from our router, which guarantees that any traffic we count was really used.

Example: Every time one of your web pages is viewed by someone on the internet, the size of that page goes towards your bandwidth usage. Below is an example of how many times a page would have to be viewed to reach 20GB of transfer

Page size 30kb = 349,525 views
Page size 40kb = 262,144 views
Page size 50kb = 209,715 views
Page size 60kb = 174,762 views

Monthly price:

This refers the amount that you will pay per month.

Annual price:

This refers to the amount that you will be paying for a 12-month annual pre-paid term (usually includes a discount).

Web based interface:

This refers to the interface that you will be using to access the administrative features for your web site (adding users, managing email, changing passwords, viewing logs, backing up your site, etc.), and there is also the fact that you can bring this up in your Internet browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape 6, etc.) and administer everything from there without any complicated technical experience necessary.

Web interface for Email:

This refers to the interface that you will be using to access the administrative features for managing your email (adding users, changing passwords, setting up vacation messages, forwards, aliases, backing up your users email, etc.), and there is also the fact that you can bring this up in your Internet browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape 6, etc.) and administer everything from there without any complicated technical experience necessary.

E-mail manager:

This refers to the ability to add/remove/edit multiple e-mail accounts through your web-based interface.

Email Forwarding

Maybe you have a large number of email addresses and don't want to check all of them separately. With the email forwarding feature, you can forward all your incoming email to another email address that you specify. This is similar to forwarding for your phone calls. You can easily set up your email forwarding or change it through your website control panel.

Web-based stats reports:

This refers to the ability to check the traffic coming to/from your site using the web-based interface.

Access to raw log files:

FrontPage 98, 2000, 2002:

This makes reference to whether or not FrontPage extensions are available for your account and that we currently support the 98, 2000 and 2002 versions.  To find out more about FrontPage click here.

FrontPage Users:

This refers to the ability to add additional administrators, advanced authors, authors, contributors and browsers; and how many you get with the package you have chosen.  To find out more about the users that you can add and the differences between them, please click here.

Password-protected directories:

This refers to the ability to have one or more password protected directories for your site.  On Windows servers this is done through FrontPage extensions.

Unique IP address:

Having a unique IP address means that you have your own address on the Internet that can be looked at any time regardless of your domain names status (active, expired, etc.)  Not having one means that viewing your site relies solely on the status of your domain name.

What is a "U"? (Unit of measurement for Colocation):

1U = 1.75" of Vertical Rack Space 2U = 3.5" of Vertical Rack Space 3U = 5.25" of Vertical Rack Space 4U = 7.00" of Vertical Rack Space

Load Balancing:

Distributing processing and communications activity evenly across a computer network so that no single device is overwhelmed. Load balancing is especially important for networks where it's difficult to predict the number of requests that will be issued to a server. Busy Web sites typically employ two or more Web servers in a load balancing scheme. If one server starts to get swamped, requests are forwarded to another server with more capacity. Load balancing can also refer to the communications channels themselves.

MRTG (Multi Router Traffic Grapher):

A tool used to monitor the traffic load on network-links. MRTG generates HTML pages containing GIF images which provide a LIVE visual representation of this traffic.  See an example here!

95th Percentile Explained:

Samples of your actual bandwidth usage are taken every five minutes from your VLAN port on the switch, utilizing Cybergauge Bandwidth Reporting. The program then averages the totals and posts the result as a five-minute usage point on your report. Over the month, we will continue to plot the five-minute averages, which total about 8,640 points plotted on the graph.

We then take the top five percent of your usage (432 points, or 36 hours) and throw it out!

Your usage is determined based upon the highest remaining usage plotted. This method of billing provides you with a number of advantages. Any usage bursts that are untypical of your bandwidth requirements are not charged to you, and this equates to receiving approximately your highest 36 hours of bandwidth usage free each month.

We then give you access via the web to view your Daily, Weekly, Monthly and MRTG graph reports at any time.  If your package(s) include a specific amount of bandwidth, any overage(s) will be billed at your contracted rate at end of the calendar month.

Committed Bandwidth:

With dedicated-based bandwidth, you are billed according to the minimum committed rate of connection speed you choose or that is included in your package. This option is designed to provide bandwidth on-demand giving the client the availability to burst at times when their Internet traffic is the heaviest. Dedicated-based bandwidth allows for short-term traffic spikes without compromising site performance.

SKL Services, Inc.'s dedicated-based bandwidth is a burstable access, which uses the "sustained usage" formula to determine the monthly access rate. At the end of each month of service, based on readings taken every 5 minutes, which are placed in ascending order, the 95th percentile is determined as the "sustained usage rate".

VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network):

A VLAN is a group of PCs, servers and other network resources that behave as if they were connected to a single, network segment — even though they may not be.  The resources and servers of other users in the colocation facility will be invisible to each of the other VLAN members.

Equally important, VLANs help meet performance needs by segmenting the network more effectively. Unlike standard switching, they restrict the dissemination of broadcast as well as node-to-node traffic, so the burden of extraneous traffic is reduced throughout the network. Security can also be improved. Since all packets traveling between VLANs may also pass through a router, standard router-based security measures can be implemented to restrict access as needed.

SQL 2000:

A server based 'heavy duty' database system from Microsoft for high traffic needs.  SQL 2000's new features, including integrated Analysis Services, data mining, and natural language query capabilities are already helping top companies synthesize huge volumes of information, recognize and predict trends, and make accurate decisions about key business issues.

SQL Server 2000 supports Extensible Markup Language (XML) and Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) standards. SQL Server 2000 also offers scalability and performance features to partition load, ensure uptime, and give you advanced management and tuning capabilities.  To learn more about Microsoft SQL 2000 click here.

This refers to whether or not you are allowed to use ASP scripting for your site.  Active Server Pages is a programming language designed to run active content on the server and then display the result on the viewer's browser. It is used extensively for such tasks as managing and querying on-line databases and building intuitive forms.

Unlike JavaScript, which downloads the actual code into your browser and then activates, ASP pages run strictly on the server. The user triggers a request from the web page, the ASP processes it, and then sends back the requested info in purely HTML format.
